Unregistered insecticide chalks have been illegally sold in the United States and Canada for more than three decades. Unlike Dead-Fast, the ingredients and packaging of these products have not been reviewed and registered by the EPA, and show no signs of quality control in the production of the packaging or chalk. Active ingredient levels in confiscated sample sticks vary from low to highly toxic.
The EPA directs consumers to safely dispose of any supplies of illegal insecticide chalk by returning the product to the retailer where it was purchased or contacting a local hazardous waste facility to arrange for disposal.
Osmegen Incorporated is a manufacturer and marketer of odor and pest control products for the household and pet industries. Established in 1993, Osmegen develops and markets solid gel air fresheners and liquid spray odor removers under the Natural Magic® brand name and insecticide chalk under the Dead-Fast brand name. Natural Magic products are sold through leading retailers, including home centers, mass merchandisers, grocery and hardware stores. Dead-Fast Insecticide Chalk is specially designed to control cockroaches, ants and crickets for up to eight weeks. Dead-Fast is the first and only insecticide chalk registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for retail sale.
Dead-Fast contains an active ingredient, tralomethrin, which is a highly active residual pyrethroid insecticide that works by attacking the nervous system of certain bugs. When these insects walk across the chalk line they pick up very small but potent particles. Direct contact and ingestion through grooming kills the insects.
Dead-Fast can be applied almost anywhere in residential, commercial and institutional structures, including: homes, apartments buildings, buses, recreational vehicles, mobile homes, utility vaults, telephone booths, and areas of hospitals, retailers, warehouses, trucks, truck trailers, freight cars, ships, and warehouses where food is not prepared, processed or served.
Areas that can be treated include: baseboards, moldings, around plumbing and other utility installations, ventilators, in dark corners in closets, windows, doors, underside of working tables and storage shelving, floor drains, garbage rooms, locker rooms, switch boxes and the back of switch plates.
Dead-Fast packaging is child resistant and the instructions are written in English, as well as Spanish and Chinese. The products dispenser design distinguishes it from blackboard chalk.
In addition, the product contains a bittering agent, Bitrix® as another safety feature.
Dead-Fast is currently available on QVC and will be available at nearly 900 Home Depot stores and Publishers Clearing House September 2006.
The suggested retail price of Dead-Fast is $4.99 per tube.
