David Farley, president of Sprite Industries, Inc. of Corona, California, has been dealing with the effects of chlorinated water in the shower on human hair, skin and lungs since the late 1980s, when his company introduced the first shower filter for chlorine-free bathing. While chlorinated public drinking water protects people from potentially harmful bacteria and other water-borne contaminants, said Farley, theres a downside to chlorine once it arrives in your home.
Chlorine exposure can actually affect your bodys long-term health, comfort and appearance. Scientific studies have linked the powerful water disinfectant to potentially harmful by-products that can contribute to the development of serious health-threatening conditions over time. Cancer of the bladder, liver, stomach, rectum and colon have all been linked to drinking chlorinated water. Heart disease, high blood pressure and allergic reactions have also been linked with chlorinated water.
Millions of homeowners today have water filters to remove chlorine from drinking water.
What millions more dont realize is, chlorine exposure is not limited to the water you drink, according to Farley. People can inadvertently double their exposure to chlorine by absorption through the skin and by inhalation of chlorine vapors in the bath or shower.
Not only is chlorine absorbed through the skin while bathing, it vaporizes in hot shower or bath water, inhaled into the lungs and transferred directly into the blood system. Other less serious, but still-annoying, side effects of bathing in chlorinated water include dry skin, brittle hair and dandruff.
While filtering shower water makes as much sense as filtering drinking water, the simple activated carbon filters used to reduce chlorine in drinking water, are not nearly as effective at removing the universal disinfectant from steaming shower water.
In 1987, Sprite invented the first non-carbon shower filter that removes chlorine. We developed our patented Chlorgon® media, said Farley, which performs better than carbon filtration and lasts longer under hot shower conditions. Our new Mediterranean Blue Chlorgon® bath salts is a packaged product that brings the same anti-chlorine benefits to home bath water. Together, these products add a new dimension to todays healthy home.
The company now markets an expansive line of non-carbon filtered shower products, including chlorine free shower heads in many styles and configurations for every shower in the home. Replaceable media cartridges are rated at three month or one year life span. Models with handsome metallic finishes, hand-held hoses, ergonomic shower handles and massaging shower heads are available in retail stores from coast to coast.
