Deck Staining Solutions - Tips From SHUR-LINE

Getting Started & Minor Repairs

  • Staining the deck protects the wood from ultraviolet sun damage, moisture and mildew damage.
  • Look for clear weather with NO rain in the forecast - 24 hours before and 24 hours after a stain project. This will help ensure the stain can absorb and dry properly.
  • Replace or repair any damaged or rotting boards, including any boards that are warped, curved or rotting. Make sure railings are secure per code.
  • Sanding may be necessary to smooth boards and remove splinters and wood filer can be used to repair any holes or blemishes.

Preparing Deck &Cleaning

  • It is best to power wash the deck to remove debris, being sure to pay close attention to debris between deck boards. Keep the wand in continuous motion and use smooth, long strokes at a consistent distance from the deck surface. You may simply hose down the deck with a good spray nozzle however the end result may not be as thorough as power washing. This may leave your deck surface with some residual debris which can cause the stain to peel and wear sooner. If necessary stubborn areas can be scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush.
  • Deck cleaners are also available and can help to increase the surface condition for better stain bonding.
  • If desired, a chemical wood brightener can be used to open up the surface of the wood and restore the appearance of old, weathered wood.

Staining Tips

  • Depending on you geographical location, it may be a good practice to allow ‘new’ pressure treated lumber to dry for up to a year. Warmer climates may only need a few months, while colder, wetter climates will be longer.
  • Every product is slightly different so check the label first.
  • Tape off any areas where stain is not desired, including the house siding, patio, beneath the deck, etc.
  • Begin by staining trim work, including railings, spindles and tight spaces.
  • For a smooth finish, use a stain pad. Roller covers are not recommended for stain application, and brushes are very time consuming and labor intensive. Attach the stain pad to a pole to comfortably stain while standing up.
  • Start staining from the back of the deck to outer areas. Remember; don’t stain yourself into a corner!
  • Next, move on to large surface areas, making sure to stain with the direction of the boards while also staining in between them.
  • A second coat may be necessary depending on the condition of the deck, the desired finish and color. Weathered decks tend to soak up much more stain than newer decks.
  • Follow stain manufacturer’s directions for any follow up care (Protective coatings may be needed depending on deck condition, environmental factors, etc.)

Maintenance

A properly stained deck requires little maintenance. Remember to regularly sweep off leaves and debris since they trap moisture on the deck surface and routinely hose and sweep off pollen and dirt.
