EEI, Alliance to Save Energy, and NBC Universal's SCI-FI Channel Launch Energy-Efficiency Home Makeover Contest, Campaign
(HIT) - A more energy-efficient future is the focus of a new contest being launched today by Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the Alliance to Save Energy, and NBC Universal's SCI FI Channel. Inspired by SCI FI's hit series "Eureka", a fictional Pacific Northwest town where the government has been relocating the world's geniuses and their families, the Eureka $mart House Energy-Efficiency Challenge (www.scifi.com/homemakeover) will reward one deserving homeowner with energy-efficiency improvements of up to $25,000 to make their home "smarter".
"Besides entering to win," said Thomas R. Kuhn, President, Edison Electric Institute, "we hope that the Eureka $mart House Energy-Efficiency Challenge will inspire people to think about what they can do to make their own home more energy efficient. It's not science fiction. Today's energy-efficient technologies, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats, and Energy Star appliances, can make our homes smarter. These products make it much easier to take control over a home's energy use, which can lead to lower monthly energy bills and greater protection for the environment."
Contestants will be asked to answer a few energy-oriented questions about their home and write a brief essay about why they should win an energy-efficiency home makeover. The entries will then be judged by a panel of representatives from SCI FI's "Visions for Tomorrow" Advisory Board, the Alliance to Save Energy and EEI.
The winner will be announced in September, and the home energy-efficiency makeover will be completed during October-Energy Awareness Month. Additional campaign sponsors include the US Department of Energy, Whirlpool Corporation, the American Gas Association, Dow Chemical Company, the Consumer Electronics Association, Osram Sylvania, CMC Energy Services, and the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute.
The Eureka $mart House Energy-Efficiency Challenge Website- www.scifi.com/homemakeover -will also offer energy-efficiency low-tech and high-tech tips that can help consumers save energy and money every month. All contestants will also be invited to visit the 6° of Energy Efficiency Challenge Web site www.sixdegreechallenge.org. There, they can "Test Their Energy IQ" and take the 6° Challenge by committing to at least one tangible energy-efficiency action and encouraging others to do the same. The 6° Challenge interactive social website was developed last year by the Alliance to Save Energy and more than 30 other nonprofit and profit partners.
