Energy Efficient Lanscaping Tips From The Edison Electric Institute

Example of energy efficient landscaping
(HIT)-With consumers looking for effective ways to take control of their energy costs, an often over-looked opportunity can be found in energy efficient landscaping. According to Edison Electric Institute, energy efficient landscaping can also help to make a home more comfortable and attractive. Using energy efficiently also helps the environment. Consumers should check with their local nursery for ideas that can work best for their area.

In Northern Regions:

  • Plant deciduous trees (those which lose their leaves in winter) on the south and west sides of the house. In the winter, the now bare trees will allow free solar heating.. In the smmeer, the tree foliage will offer cooling shade.
  • Plant evergreen trees on the north side of the house to cut exposure to cold winds during the winter months.

In Southern Regions:

  • Plant evergreen trees on the south and west side of the house to create shade.
  • Use grass or other ground cover around your home instead of paving material. The ground cover won’t absorb or reflect head helping to keep the house cooler.

In All Regions:

  • Plant shrubbery close to the house. This will act as another layer of insulation for your home.
  • Consider mounting vine-covered trellises on exterior walls. These will insulate a home against hot summer sun and cold winter winds.

And finally, check with your electric company to learn ways to save energy inside your home.
