(HIT) - Your electric company is a great source for energy saving ideas, programs and services. The electric company can help you get more value from every dollar you spend on electricity. This can help you save money and protect the environment, according to Edison Electric Institute.

Electric company programs offer free, expert advice on saving electricity. Many also offer financial incentives to buy energy-efficient appliances, as well as on-line energy audits to help you learn where your home may be wasting energy.

These energy-efficiency programs are making a difference. The U.S. Department of Energy says that electric company efficiency efforts helped to save almost 800 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity between 1989 and 2005. That’s enough electricity to power almost 74 million homes for one year! And, this savings is equal to the annual electricity output of about 340 average size power plants.
