Is your Home Wasting Energy?

(HIT) - If it’s not adequately insulated, it probably is, according to Edison Electric Institute. Insulation helps your house keep you comfortable. It also helps your furnace or air conditioner work less, which can mean lower heating and cooling bills.

To make sure your home is properly insulated, follow these tips:

  • Visit this U.S. Department of Energy Web site to see if your home has the proper amount of insulation: http://www.ornl.gov/~roofs/Zip/ZipHome.html.
  • Look for holes and other openings around windows, doors, and pipes. These let your home’s heated or cooled air leak out. Plug the leaks with foam, caulking and weather stripping.
  • Make sure your home’s fireplace has tightly fitting dampers that can be closed when the fireplace is not in use.
