2012 Paint Trends Call For Bold, Unconventional Colors Mixed With Personal Touches(HIT) - 2011 was all about embracing individuality in home décor by creating uniquely personal spaces that buck the matchy-matchy trends from the past that tend to force a uniform style into every type of home. Just as no two people are the same, no two homes are alike—so why force a trend somewhere it just doesn’t fit? We recently sat down with Shannon Kaye, color expert and consultant for CertaPro Painters, the largest painting franchise company in North America, to discuss how things will change in the coming years.
A great paint color has the ability to completely transform a room. That’s why choosing paint colors plays such an integral role in interior decorating. Looking to 2012, trends center around experimentation with bold color combinations. Think emerald green with black, navy blue, bright poppy pinks and reds or oranges. Or mix shades of royal purples with dusty mauve, caramel and pale gray. The key is to go for rich, opulent color themes with high contrast—like deep navy blue with hot pink and poppy red accents. Hot pink, once regarded as a color strictly used for teenage girls’ bedrooms, demands more respect in 2012. A sumptuous shade of hot pink punches up a small space like a bathroom wonderfully. Add bright white accents and the room is suddenly transformed. And don’t count out always-happy shades of yellow. The color of optimism, yellow instantly perks up a room and creates a cheery mood. To go for the bold look, try mixing yellows with deep navy or plush shades of purple. If you tend to lean on the safe side when experimenting with color schemes and going bold isn’t your style, there are tamer trends to experiment with as well. Try a neutral trend where warm grays and taupe-tones are contrasted with texture and patterns like green foliage and succulents to add a burst of color to stark backgrounds. “Rather than dictate the entire style of a room, color is becoming a tool to express our personalities and enhance the unique pieces in a room,” said Kaye. “The trend towards collections, found objects and flea market finds is also driving our desire to make homes more eclectic and personal.”
“The overall feeling being created with these trends centers around personal self-expression and an optimistic outlook,” Kaye said. “It seems we’re ready to believe the future is bright again.” Paint is an easy way to change the look and feel of a room without replacing expensive furniture or investing in costly home remodeling projects. If you decide to use paint to add modern style and freshness to your home this year, it’s important to know what types of paints are the safest but still provide the best quality. While we used to appreciate the smell of a freshly painted room, we now know how toxic those odors can be to our health. When shopping for paints, always look for products that are labeled either “no or low VOC.” VOC stands for “volatile organic compounds,” which can be damaging to health. Some paint manufacturers just mask the fumes with more chemicals to eliminate the smell, so be sure whatever paints you buy have low or no VOC. Always be sure to ventilate the room being painted as much as possible, and clean up properly by cleaning painting tools for re-use in the future.
