You Can Minimize The Risk Of Indoor Home Pollutants When Tightening Your Home Or Remodeling

(HIT)- It is estimated that Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors. And with studies showing that indoor environments are two to three times more polluted than the outdoors, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) as one of the top five environmental threats. States are even looking at legislation to limit the emissions of VOC (volatile organic compounds) in household products.

With this in mind, if you are tightening your home for the winter or are considering undertaking a remodeling project, look for products that limit emissions of organic compounds into your home. For example, CertainTeed Corporation's fiber glass insulation products (batts and rolls) and blowing insulation products (InsulSafe®, OPTIMA® and System 5®) are tested quarterly to meet the established standards of GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. GREENGUARD standards are based on the same strict criteria used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the state of Washington, OSHA and the World Health Organization for Total Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, including formaldehyde.

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is the world's leading third-party organization that tests and certifies low emitting home products and building materials. It uses a rigorous series of independent tests to provide builders with an authoritative guide for products with low chemical and particle emissions.

Other products to be mindful of from an emissions perspective when tightening your home or remodeling this spring and summer are:

  • acrylics
  • adhesives
  • foams
  • aerosols
  • flooring
  • paints and coatings
  • sealants
  • carpeting
  • composite woods
  • agrifiber products
