CertainTeed AcoustaBoard Black Insulation Chosen For New Transport Station At Dulles Airport
(HIT) - CertainTeed Corporation is proud to announce the installation of its CertaPro AcoustaBoard Black fiber glass board insulation in the construction of a new underground transport station at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia near Washington, D.C.
The project calls for 142,000 square feet of AcoustaBoard Black, supplied by Strober Building Supply in Chantilly, Virginia, for ceiling insulation in the underground station. The station will provide transportation between the existing main terminal and new midfield concourse. To comply with local building codes, the ceiling will include two layers of 2" AcoustaBoard Black and one layer of 1" AcoustaBoard Black. Project architect Mark Townsend, an Associate Principal with high-profile international architecture firm Kohn, Pedersen Fox Associates in New York, made the specification after discussing the product with CertainTeed representatives. A first-time specifier of AcoustaBoard Black, Townsend says he was impressed with what it had to offer.
"With all of this underground space, theres a wide range of different insulation requirements," Townsend says. "We wanted the product primarily for its insulation properties, but we also were interested in its durability. We needed something that will last for years after the project is completed."
"AcoustaBoard Black is an ideal choice for this project, as it provides both thermal and acoustic insulation, two very important factors in an underground location surrounded by the high noise of airplanes and other modes of public transportation," says Howard Deck, President of CertainTeeds Insulation Group. "It will also give the airport the long-lasting performance required for this project. We are thrilled to see one of our products featured on such a critical and important transportation hub that services our nations capital."
Located on 11,000 acres of land straddling the border of Fairfax Country and Loudoun County, Virginia, Dulles International Airport works with Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to serve the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which also includes Maryland and north Virginia. Dulles International is the fifth busiest airport in the United States, with 1,800 to 2,000 flights handled daily.
Installation of AcoustaBoard Black at Dulles Airport began in April, and is expected to continue through August. Facchina Construction Company, Inc., of La Plata, Maryland, general contractor of the project, expects the entire station to be complete by 2008.
