Don’t Throw Away That "Green" Shower Curtain!

by Carole Stewart

(HIT) - The handiest recycle job in my house is a neatly folded, forest green vinyl shower curtain, complete with metal grommets. It was expensive, and even after years of tossing it into the washer and dryer and reusing it in the shower, I hated to just throw it away. Instead, tucked it away in the emergency tool kit in the back of the station wagon. In no time at all the entire family recognized the "vinyl curtain" as a homeowner’s prize.

When a sudden storm hit and leaves and branches fell big time in the yard and driveway, they were wrapped in green vinyl, loaded into our (matching green) Outback, and hauled away without even having to vacuum the vehicle. Back into the washer and dryer, and sure enough, folded and ready when an under-the-car repair popped up, that might well have ruined a pair of dress pants and an afternoon outing.

I couldn’t get a good forest green replacement to match the master bath linens, and had to settle for a heavy duty shower curtain liner … which washed and dried even more perfectly, After purchasing new ones for each shower—to be used with fashionable fabric curtains, I was well satisfied. Again the curtains were kept clean, and well-outlasted their anticipated life.

It occurred me that I should write the manufacturer, or start a new business, marketing this handy product as a sort of "mini-tarp" because of the convenience it afforded.

Five Steps To Get The Most Life Out An Old Shower Curtain

1. Use as planned in the shower.

2. Wash every six weeks or so with a load of laundry, spraying any mold or mildew spots.

3. Dry at normal heat with laundry

4. Replace as needed to keep the bathroom up to date.

5. Retire to garage, car, or workroom for a multitude of messy tasks.

6. Stow a couple of light weight shock cords and you are ready for countless odds and ends.
