West Nile Virus Update
(HIT) - Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading 342 new human cases of West Nile virus in 2008. California leads the list with 97 new West Nile virus cases, followed by 53 in Mississippi and 32 in Colorado. There is no vaccine to prevent West Nile virus, so the best defense is to prevent mosquito bites. Try to avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Wear long sleeves and long pants, and use insect repellent. You can also reduce your chances of getting bitten by mosquitoes by helping to reduce their populations. Eliminate pools of standing water near your home, and float Mosquito Dunks® in backyard ponds, birdbaths and fountains. The active ingredient in Mosquito Dunks is B.t.i. (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis) a bacterium that is toxic specifically to mosquito larvae before they become flying, biting, disease-carrying adults. Applied to any standing water or even to dry areas that occasionally flood, Mosquito Dunks effectively eradicate mosquito larvae for up to 30 days. A six-pack of Mosquito Dunks sells for about $10 at home centers, hardware stores and garden centers. (Source: CDC, Aug. 26, 2008)
