Bringing In The Sun With Energy Savings, And A Whole New Vocabulary

(HIT) - Just when you were comfortable with traditional methods of heating and cooling family real estate--interest in solar heating and ventilation began to grow ... both in popularity and affordability. Across the country consumers are learning the ins and outs of using the sun to lower the cost of family energy use. It's a task that grows the vocabulary with terms like modular designs, recirculation air systems, fresh air options, and self contained power sources, as it expands the viability of solar energy.

At the Village Hardware in Cloudcroft, NM, Co-owners Joy and Paul Crowley watch for early returns from a new stand alone SolarSheat® 1500G Panel. It's a 4' x 8' self-contained power source unit that has been installed at near ground level on his Southern-facing storefront. Manufactured by Toronto based Your Solar Home, Inc., the SolarSheat® is supposed to lower the heating cost inside the neighborhood store by 20% (or more depending on the availability of the sun), while creating a working model for customer observation.

Similar affordable-stand-alone-units are available at the store for professional and DIY installation.

"It's too early to say what kind of energy savings we'll get from this unit," say Crowley, "but one thing is for certain, it's generating a lot of up front interest among local residents. Most homeowners have a fundamental idea of the solar operation, but not so many have actually seen a working unit."

For those still unfamiliar with the solar "household" rhetoric, here are some of the basics:

  • Solar heating panels collect heat from the sun and allow users to keep the furnace at a lower setting
  • Help consumers supplement for high heating costs
  • Affordable - excellent return on investment
  • Reduce Co2 emissions
  • Versatility - single room, multiple room or whole house application
  • Do-it-yourself and trade installed systems
  • SRCC certified U.S. tax grants available

New Village Hardware

The New Village Hardware is a year-around hardware resource for residents of the rural area of The Sacramento Mountains in Southern New Mexico. The area has 17,000 cabins and vacation homes at elevations between 6,000 and 9,500 ft above sea level. Sun and clear skies are abundant. Lacking a source of natural gas for heating, the cost of propane and electricity are a constant target for reduction. The Crowleys' have updated and operated the store since early 2007.

For additional information call 575-921-7939. The store provides the local market with a large variety of rental tools and equipment as well as most common building materials and hardware. New Village Hardware will act as a stocking distributor for the SolarSheet products initially with plans to expand into more sophisticated systems at a later time. The SolarSheet panels are a good starting point, as they require very minimal installation expertise. There is no connection to external electricity (the two speed blower operates from solar cells) and only two 5 inch holes are required for ducting. The 100 pound panel can be installed by a handyman and helper in a few hours with simple tools. Other products from the same manufacturer include whole home "helper" roof mounted heating systems [that hook into an existing fossil fuel furnace at the cold air intake], hot water heating and electrical generation.
